Thanks for the input and yes I did check the drivers and they all seem fine. If that doesn't help, then it could be a bad cable connection, and if that is all fine, it could be the motherboard. You might want to try a system recovery (not a system restore- completely reset the PC- backup your data, save it to external hard drive, the cloud, wherever).
You said the I/O controller was changed, and the fact that it didn't help tells me something else is wrong. One of the first things that went sally were the touchpad and keyboard 8( It's an HP, and I've owned 2 HP laptops and both died due to motherboard issues. Are you getting any error messages? Blue screens? Slow boots? That's usually the first place I look. Doesn't sound like a driver issue, but you might want to check.
